Identifying an imperial thread takes more than finding a nut that starts on the bolt. BSW, BSF and UNC can share similar diameters, and some share the same pitch. For restoration and model engineering work, check the thread standard as well as the size before ordering a replacement.
The most useful starting measurements are the outside diameter of a male thread and its threads per inch, usually shortened to TPI. Combine those with thread-form information and the assembly’s documentation.
What do BSW, BSF and UNC mean?
- BSW: British Standard Whitworth, a coarse-pitch series with a 55-degree thread form.
- BSF: British Standard Fine, a finer-pitch series using the Whitworth 55-degree form.
- UNC: Unified National Coarse, using a 60-degree thread form.
“Whitworth” is often used when discussing older British fasteners. For an order, record the exact series rather than relying on that broader description. British Standard Pipe, or BSP, is a separate pipe-thread system; do not confuse its nominal size with a BSW bolt diameter.
Common BSW, BSF and UNC pitches
| Diameter | BSW | BSF | UNC |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/4 inch | 20 TPI | 26 TPI | 20 TPI |
| 5/16 inch | 18 TPI | 22 TPI | 18 TPI |
| 3/8 inch | 16 TPI | 20 TPI | 16 TPI |
| 1/2 inch | 12 TPI | 16 TPI | 13 TPI |
These selected values can be checked against Woodstock Industrial Supplies’ thread comparison chart. This is a reference for standard series, not a tapping-drill table or a guarantee that an unknown worn fastener matches one of them.
Step 1: measure the thread diameter
Clean the fastener enough to expose the thread without removing sound material. Use callipers to measure across the crests of a male thread, rather than measuring the bolt head or spanner opening. Check more than one position if there is visible wear or damage.
A nominal 1/2-inch bolt corresponds to 12.7 mm, but the actual measured thread can be smaller because of manufacturing tolerance or wear. Use the measurement to narrow the possibilities, not as the sole proof of the standard.
Step 2: check the pitch
A suitable thread pitch gauge makes this easier. Offer the gauge to a sound length of thread and inspect whether its teeth match evenly. Use the gauge intended for the thread form under investigation; a pitch match alone cannot distinguish every system.
If measuring pitch manually, count the spaces between crests. Eleven crests span ten pitch intervals, not eleven. Measure over several intervals where possible, then compare the result with a reference chart. A short, damaged thread may require a better sample or proper thread gauges.
Step 3: distinguish BSW from UNC
The table shows the problem: 1/4-inch BSW and 1/4-inch UNC are both 20 TPI. Diameter and pitch can agree while the thread form differs. Some mismatched combinations may begin to engage; that does not establish a correct fit.
Check the original drawing, a reliable parts specification or the form using appropriate inspection equipment. If you cannot establish it, have the part identified before replacing the fastener. Do not force a trial nut onto a valuable stud or casting.
A useful 1/2-inch example
A male thread measuring approximately 12.7 mm across the crests, with a matching 12 TPI gauge, is consistent with 1/2-inch BSW. At that nominal diameter, UNC is 13 TPI and BSF is 16 TPI. The example narrows the identification; condition, form and original specification still need checking.
Record the result as “1/2-inch BSW, 12 TPI”, then add the required length, material and finish to your order notes. That description is much more useful than “half-inch imperial bolt”.
Buying replacement Whitworth nuts
Match the nut to the identified thread and the assembly’s requirements. Keep BSW, BSF and Unified fasteners in labelled compartments so that a later repair does not start with another mixed box.
Our zinc-plated steel BSW Whitworth hex nuts are sold individually in the listed thread sizes. Check that the size and BSW standard match your bolt or stud before choosing the quantity you need. For organising frequently used replacements, see our small-workshop consumables checklist.
